Iphigeneia in Aulis

Iphigenia, in Greek mythology, is the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. The Greek fleet cannot launch its attack on Troy from the port of Aulis because of lack of wind. The seer Calchas announces that no wind will come until the leader of the Greeks, Agamemnon, does not appease Artemis – whom he offended by slaying a stag meant as an offering – by sacrificing his own daughter. After long vacillation, Agamemnon succumbs to the terrible bargain. Under the pretense of celebrating her nuptials with Achilles in Aulis, he lures Iphigenia away from home and brings her to the camp.
