The termite must stay in the wood

In one of the greatest works of Hungarian film history, Punitive Expedition by Dezsõ Magyar, the Austrian Emperor’s retaliatory army congregates against a small Serbian village. At the head of the apocalyptic regiment, riding to the music of the VI. Brandenburg Concerto, is a figure with features Dürer might have drawn. The rendering of this figure is the merit of Tibor Gencsy, who has retained his Düreresque style even past age 80. Over the course of history, the Hungarian noble class collapsed and disappeared, but with the help of Tibor Gencsy, we may have an insider’s look at a unique story of nobility. In this film Péter Dobai, the screenplay writer of the Punitive Expedition, and the makers of this film talk with Tibor Gencsy about war, aristocracy, and horses.
