Good Luck, men!

In 1989, 67,500 Hungarian miners descended into the deep on a daily basis. Today this number is 1,800. In the year of the change in regime, government subsidies for Hungarian coal-mining were terminated. A series of miners’ strikes followed. As the result of a government decision in 1992, the mines and power plants were merged, meaning that they could continue working in this integrated form. More failures; they hoped for a solution from privatization. In 1996, the Lyukó mine was obtained by a foreign owner; in 2005 even the pithead machinery was toppled. The film presents the story of the closing of the last deep-working coal mine in Borsod County (the next-to-last in Hungary) and gives an overview of the last 15 years of the industry, focusing on the lives of those most influenced: the miners themselves.
