The Great Visit

The first visit of the Pope to Hungary, besides being a spiritual or political experience for many, was also a great media event. Scout groups, Catholic communities, and Greek Orthodox wanted to see, and did indeed, see the venerable guest at the airport, at the People’s Stadium, or at Máriapócs. But even those people and families to whom religion is unimportant were affected by this event. Through the TV screen, this event made for an interesting counterpoint to the rituals of preparing the Sunday dinner, hairwashing, napping, getting ready to go to the disco or to work. In this film a family lives their usual Sunday life while in the living room on the „private altar” of the TV, the media airs the Pope’s visit from morning till night.class and invited Sándor Simó back to the university. Here in Hungary he is spoken of with adoration and abhorrence. He is a genius and the „youngest Hungarian film director” according to many.
