Hunfootball, The 91st Minute

The Hungarian National Football Team loses its chance to qualify for the World Cup in the 91st minute in the game against Sweden. This is nothing new. For twenty years the national team has been unable to qualify. This film documents the Hungarian U-19 Team’s European Championships qualifying tour in Sweden, not long after the adult national team’s painful fiasco. Young Hungarian boys in warm-up suits with the weight of the football myth on their shoulders try their luck in the football-cultured part of Europe. Training, checking out girls, enduring complaints, sightseeing (is that church baroque or art nouveau?), games, goals, and a brainwash at halftime when they can’t beat even a „no-name” team. The dramaturgic span of the three matches is interwoven with discussions about Hungarian football’s crisis and possibilities for renewal, along with images from juniors training workshops that will hopefully help Hungarian football rise from the rut it is stuck in.
